Tuck Pointing

Boston's Tuckpointing & Repointing Experts

Boston and its surrounding towns boast an unparalleled architectural legacy, with countless brick and stone structures that tell the story of centuries. Over time, the mortar joints that bind these beautiful buildings together naturally deteriorate due to harsh New England weather, leading to aesthetic blemishes, water intrusion, and even structural instability. That’s where expert tuckpointing and repointing come in – essential masonry techniques for preserving both the beauty and integrity of your property.

Understanding Tuckpointing & Repointing

While often used interchangeably, “tuckpointing” and “repointing” are distinct, though related, masonry restoration processes. Both involve addressing deteriorated mortar joints, but their primary goals and techniques differ:

Repointing:
This is the foundational process of removing old, deteriorated mortar from the joints and replacing it with fresh, new mortar. The primary goal of repointing is to restore the structural integrity of the masonry, prevent moisture penetration, and extend the lifespan of the brick or stone work. The new mortar is typically colored to match the original or a suitable historical blend.

Tuckpointing (True Tuckpointing):
This is a more specialized, aesthetic technique that creates the illusion of very fine, precise mortar joints. After the existing mortar is removed and replaced (similar to repointing), a colored mortar (often matched to the brick or stone itself) is applied to fill the majority of the joint. Then, a thin, contrasting line of lime putty or similar material, called a “fillet,” is carefully cut into the center of this wider joint. This contrasting line gives the appearance of a much finer, crisp joint, historically used to make irregular brickwork appear more uniform and refined.

In Boston, when people refer to “tuckpointing,” they are often generally referring to the process of repointing – renewing the mortar joints – given the prevalence of traditional brick buildings. We understand both techniques and can recommend the most appropriate solution for your specific property.
