Understanding Tuckpointing & Repointing
Repointing:
This is the foundational process of removing old, deteriorated mortar from the joints and replacing it with fresh, new mortar. The primary goal of repointing is to restore the structural integrity of the masonry, prevent moisture penetration, and extend the lifespan of the brick or stone work. The new mortar is typically colored to match the original or a suitable historical blend.
Tuckpointing (True Tuckpointing):
This is a more specialized, aesthetic technique that creates the illusion of very fine, precise mortar joints. After the existing mortar is removed and replaced (similar to repointing), a colored mortar (often matched to the brick or stone itself) is applied to fill the majority of the joint. Then, a thin, contrasting line of lime putty or similar material, called a “fillet,” is carefully cut into the center of this wider joint. This contrasting line gives the appearance of a much finer, crisp joint, historically used to make irregular brickwork appear more uniform and refined.
